A modern kids Pirates and Mermaids Birthday Party full of ideas for affordable decorations and line art pirate mermaid illustrations.
I’m not going to lie… I’m a sucker for a party with a theme. In my past life (before kids) this is the kind of thing I wanted to be doing for a job. Did you know I went to school for events and conventions management straight out of high school? Ha! I’ve definitely changed but I still can’t pass up the opportunity for some party decorations. I love making a party fit the theme my kids choose with the modern style I prefer… all without spending too much cash.
This party is from my twins 5th birthday party… which was a while ago now. Since they’re boy/girl twins- finding a party theme that they both love is always fun and this year… they wanted pirates and mermaids! I’m not going to lie… this theme seemed super cheesy to me. I know, it’s a kids’ party and cheesy is the name of the game but I love a challenge and turns out… I’m in love with this theme too now. Here’s what I put together!
We kept it very simple, just the way I like it. This party was in the middle of our kitchen remodel so there wasn’t even flooring in the dining room (notice the crop job- ha!). We still love to use our house, even when it’s in the middle of our DIY renovations so we focused on the dining room and decorating the table.
The twins really wanted balloons although they both had different ideas of what that should look like. We ended up going with clear balloons and had the party store fill them with confetti. We chose two different colours- one for the pirates and one for the mermaids. This way, each of them got exactly what they’d asked for.
For the pirates themed balloons, we filled them with black confetti for the pirate flag and gold for their hidden treasure. The mermaids got teal glitter (of course!).
I illustrated these pirates and mermaids for an invitation and colouring pages for them and decided to print them off to have on the wall behind the table. They really loved these decorations and coloured them all when the party was done!
I made those into a cut file bundle so you can use the pirate and mermaid cut files for your own projects!

Other than the backdrop, we just added some shells to the table and then decorated their cake and loot bags. We asked friends to come in costume so we spent the rest of the time on their DIY pirate and mermaid costumes!
The grab bags I cut out the pirate ships on my Cricut (aff) and the friends my daughter invited got mermaid bags with gems from the dollar store. We just use paper lunch bags for grab bags to keep things affordable.
We looked at a ton of different cake ideas but when we found mermaid themed sprinkles and some skull sprinkles, they decided they just wanted a cake covered in sprinkles. Done and done, I like easy!
