Mattress shopping can be overwhelming, what do you even look for? Here’s a free printable list of things to consider before you shop to help you narrow down what you are looking for.
If you’re like most everyone I know… mattress shopping isn’t an every day task for you. I’ve read that they should be replaced every 8-10 years or when you start getting poor sleeps on your mattress. For me, that’s been once in my marriage and this past month I helped my sister pick out one for her new home when they upgraded to a King size mattress!
So I thought I’d put together a mattress shopping checklist so you can print it off and make note of what you’d like before you hit the stores (online or in person!). We found these factors were helpful in picking her mattress.
We are grateful to partner with Maxzzz for this post, we ultimately ended up choosing their Maxzzz 10 Inch 7-Zone Pocket Spring Mattress which you can find here. As someone who slept on it every night that I stayed there after long renovation days, I can tell you it was a dream to sleep on and helped me wake up with no aches and pains like I often feel when sleeping away from home!
Alright, let’s get to this checklist!

The first things I suggest you note on the mattress shopping checklist is the size you’re looking for and your budget. Now you might not have a budget in mind, but as you start shopping, I’m sure you’ll quickly get an idea of what you’d be comfortable spending.
Next up, I suggest you make note of your biggest pain point. Is it that as you roll over, it wakes up your partner? Or is it that you wake up with sore hips? Or does your mattress sag in the middle? Making note of what you want to remedy with your current sleeping arrangements is a great way to pinpoint what will actually make you happy in a mattress!
Now, let’s get more specific… Firm or Soft?
Firm or soft is a hard one, I tend to fall somewhere in between. In researching this past month, I read that soft is better for side sleepers, while firmer is better for back sleepers. Combo sleepers or stomach sleepers fall somewhere in between. Personally, I like firm with a soft topper. I also read that it’s helpful to consider your weight when choosing firm or soft- as a firm mattress won’t flex for you if you’re very light. On that note, we chose very soft ones for our kids that as an adult with back pain… aren’t my favourite!
This mattress is a medium firmness, it was great for honestly for everyone that tried it myself (a side sleeper!), my husband (a stomach sleeper) and my sister!
Alright, moving on down the mattress shopping checklist to other preferences… If you’re upgrading just your mattress, what about thickness? Are all your sheets standard depth and you love them and want to avoid going to deep pocket sheets? What about your bed frame? Some are built for super chunky mattresses and would look silly with a thin mattress (mine!). My sister’s new bed frame is more low profile, so a super thick mattress would make it look very small (see above), this one is 10″.
Also- are you a warm or cool sleeper? Some mattresses absorb heat and others have cooling layers. Is this something you’re conscious of? This one has a cooling layer.
Lastly, I definitely suggest looking at the warranty and if you’re looking online, the reviews!
Hopefully this mattress shopping checklist has been a helpful starting point if you’re looking at shopping for a new mattress and really didn’t know what to consider (like my sister!).
