This modern holiday DIY Acrylic sign is easy to make and a simple line art Christmas tree is the perfect way to top it all off. Step by step instructions for both!
I told you I was on a kick. A kick of acrylic signs and I just can’t get enough. So it’s obvious I had to create one for the holidays too! Now that I’ve made these a few times… this whole thing came together in less than half an hour including dry time (I set a fan on the paint!). That’s pretty good, right?! I’m sharing this DIY with a few of my blogging friends to give you a whole handful of holiday DIY inspiration. You can see that all at the bottom of this post!

I
Since I’ve already shared a tutorial to make your own modern acrylic sign… I thought I’d share that again, just summarized with a full step by step for drawing this easy line art Christmas tree! I’m a sucker for kind of messy line art. I actually love perfect line art… but I’m not a perfectionist nor an artist so messy is my friend- it hides all my little mistakes and makes them intentional.
How to Make an Acrylic Sign
First things first? make the background for your sign! I used picture frame acrylic for this- so it’s thinner and of lesser quality than acrylic from the hardware store BUT it’s also super affordable (dollar store picture frames, guys!) and you can cut it with a utility knife and straight edge.
I painted on a variety of green paints and mixed in some black to keep in nice and rich and dark. I made sure to keep my edges messy and unfinished looking and vary the colours and brush stroke patterns. Let this dry completely if you can be that patient, or if you’re like me, set a fan on it for 20 minutes before flipping it onto wax paper to paint the front. When you’re pulling it off of the wax paper, make sure to carefully peel this back instead of just pulling it off.
Not enough instructions? I hear ya! You can read this post which has a lot more chatting and process photos of painting the acrylic sign.
Now it’s time for that tree! I used a fine tip white paint pen to paint this on. Here’s the step by step instructions for that art!
How To Draw A Line Art Tree
When you look at it this closely… it’s totally messy, right?! But I feel like that’s part of the charm! It’s modern and a bit abstract and I totally love it. I finished my sign off with a thin line scribbly lettering of ‘Merry Christmas’ and I’m so happy with it! I’ve been having a bit of troubles deciding what direction to take my holiday decor this year and this piece is giving me major creativity for my house!

This is great. I love it. Is there a way of making it into a printable??? I would love to print it on cardstock and frame it instead of painting it on acrylic. :)
