I know it seems like I’m all about Christmas up in here… but we haven’t even pulled out our decorations yet! I’m slowly making some simple pieces that I want to base my decor around and hopefully when I pull out those bins… only things that really fit with the simple decor we’re working towards will make an appearance! This wood veneer garland fits perfectly with the simply neutral decor I’m dreaming of. I love the modern (maybe a bit nordic?) aesthetic it has and the cedar sprigs make it holiday ready. Doesn’t it match my simple white twig and greens holiday wreath perfectly?
Confession: I totally bought this wood veneer for another project that was a complete bust. So when I spotted this wood ring garland from The Merry Thought, I knew it needed to become Christmas decor. But the veneer I have is sheets, not the fusible tape and it just didn’t bend into circles, so I got creative and I’m really happy with what I ended up with. Now I’m kind of glad the other project didn’t work out so I was able to make this baby.
Here’s what you’ll need to make your own:
- Wood veneer (I grabbed mine in the mouldings section at The Home Depot)
- Twine
- Scissors
- Hot glue gun
- Fresh cedar
Start by cutting out your strips of wood veneer. I found it easiest to cut a length of veneer, then snip the width I wanted before folding along the wood grain where I snipped to snap it. Scissors work to cut through it no problem, I just found this faster. When you have your strips, you’re ready to get glueing!
I spread out the twine and laid out the wood veneer strips before starting to glue, I glued a few pieces at a time, pressing the twine into the bead of hot glue.
You could totally leave it as is for a non-holiday garland but I chose to add in the cedar. The great thing about hot glue is that it peels off really nicely so at the end of the season I can just take these sprigs out and it will be a plain wood veneer garland for any season. Next year, I can just glue some new sprigs in between if I want to!
That’s all there is to it. This was such a quick DIY and I love the festive touch it brings to our entryway. The more bits and pieces of Christmas we’re adding makes me want to spend a day pulling out the tree! I can’t wait to see if I can really do Christmas without all the glitz… Tell me- what’s your holiday style this year? Do you like to switch it up or are you the same year after year?

Thanks so much Lisa! I am sure happy with it… but not as much with the stickiness of that glitter tape! I’m replacing it every two days ;)
