Today I’m excited to be sharing this simple watercolour painting with you all! You might have spotted this guy in my Spring Home Tour that I shared last week (you can check it out here!). This Easter bunny silhouette is so easy to create using my template and basic tubes of watercolour paints. I love the texture and bleed of these watercolor silhouettes- I can’t wait to try the technique for other shapes now… any suggestions?!
This piece of art is so simple but really helps update our mantel for the spring season. When I think of spring decorations, I usually think of pastels. Those really aren’t the colours I prefer to decorate in my home, so it was fun to give the traditional Easter shape a more modern twist with the moody blues and black. I’m sure a few of you are thinking that you don’t want to learn to paint it on your own and hey- that’s okay too. So I did scan mine in and am offering that as a free printable as well. If you’re thinking that you’re not an artist- that’s okay, I’m totally not either. I’ll be sharing a simple trick that makes this project pretty much tracing- so this is a beginners watercolor tutorial.
Since watercolour is hard to explain with just words and photos- I made a video for this one. I think it shows you so much more clearly than photos could. Ready to check it out? If you’re not already subscribed to my channel over on YouTube, I’d love if you did! There’s lots of rad DIY and home decor happening over there too ;)
Pretty simple, right? It’s essentially tracing thanks to the light box and then dropping the colour into the water. The lightbox (I’m using my Cricut BrightPad) lets us trace through even really thick paper like watercolour paper without any troubles. Plus- then you don’t have any annoying pencil marks to erase when you’re done!Isn’t it mesmerizing to watch the watercolors move around as you drop in more color? I’m totally in love with this process and can’t wait to try it with some other shapes for different seasons!
To make this bunny watercolour painting, you will need:
- Cricut BrightPad or any lightbox
- Watercolour tubes: specifically the Prussian Blue, Mars Black and Viridian Green (although, I probably won’t bother with the green next time.
- Watercolour paper (this is the one I typically use)
- Large round brush (like these ones, mine is from Michaels)
- This is the frame that I used

Alright! I’ll leave it at that- I hope that this has encouraged you to try something new! If you’re loving watercolours as much as this girl, you might like to check out another simple watercolour tutorial that I have using these same modern colours! Ain’t she pretty?
