It’s another week of our Modern Holiday Home series and yet again- I’m really excited about this project! If you’ve missed the first few… this month, I’ve joined forces with four other rad Canadian bloggers who love black, white, greenery and shine as much as I do for our Modern Holiday Home series. We’re going to be bringing some fun holiday projects and decor EVERY SINGLE WEEK for five weeks. It’s been so fun to take on a challenge that’s focused on modern holiday decor AND a supply. This week we took on Krylon products and I couldn’t help but test out one of their Copper Leafing Pens to make this Christmas countdown chalkboard. You can find all of our projects linked at the bottom of this post- and I KNOW you will love them because I totally do… every single one of these could go in my house!
Now it’s time to get to the goods… I absolutely love the way this Christmas countdown chalkboard pops with the copper leafing and festive white decor! You could dress yours up and garnish it however you’d like, but here are the basics.
To make this DIY Christmas countdown chalkboard, you’ll need:
- MDF or wood cut to size
- Krylon chalkboard spray paint in black
- Pencil/Eraser
- Krylon Copper Leafing Pen
- Chalk
This project is SO simple thanks to chalkboard spray paint. Start by having your piece of wood or MDF (mine is MDF- the same one size that I used for this foiled tree sign) cut to size and give a light sand to the sharp corners. On MDF always make sure to use a super fine grit sandpaper. Then give it a paint! You should *technically* use a primer… but I skipped that ;)
Did you know that you can get chalkboard paint in SPRAY? You guys, this is life changing for me! I’m such a lazy painter, I love to spray paint way more than actually painting.
When the paint is dry, sketch out your design with a pencil. I chose to do some mistletoe or holly hanging down the side and letter ‘Christmas Countdown’ on the top. I googled a bunch of images line drawing mistletoe for inspiration. Have you heard of line drawing? I love it! So beautiful.
Once I was happy with my line drawing, I got to work with a Krylon Copper Leafing Pen. It’s like drawing with a normal paint marker, but WAY more beautiful. It dries nice and quick too, so you don’t have to be too patient with this guy but the shine?! Oh goodness, it’s so perfect! I’m for sure going to be using this on more projects in the future.
See that shine?! It’s so hard to capture in photos. But it really is beautiful and pops off the black chalkboard so well.
Then all you need to do is start counting days! My kids are excited to do this… but also excited to just scribble all over the chalkboard. I had a lot of ‘help’ for these photos. And this chalkboard doesn’t have a real number on it right now ;)
I am really happy with how this turned out! I thought I couldn’t use another holiday sign… but really, I could never say no to another sign.
Make sure to check out the other projects in the series! I could honestly put any one of them (or ALL of them!) in my house and they’d fit right in. I love these ladies’ style!

Thanks so much Andrea! I’ve used their chalkboard paint a few times and totally love it! So much easier than the brush on.
